A breach of the Pentagon's Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) exposed sensitive personal data, including Social Security numbers and job details, on 2.76 million living people and 294,000 deceased individuals, according to a U.S. defense official who spoke to ABC News. DMDC is one of the Pentagon's main personnel record databases, covering active duty and reserve troops, civilians, contractors, retirees, veterans, and family members, with more than 60 million records total.
The unauthorized access occurred between October 2025 and July 2026, when DMDC discovered and patched the vulnerability, the official said. Defense officials say they've found no evidence yet that the exposed data has been misused and are offering affected individuals identity protection and credit monitoring. Military Times first reported the breach last week.
