A Department of War official told Fox News that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth fired Army Lt.Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Joint Staff’s director for strategy, plans and policy, amid an investigation into alleged leaks of classified information to journalists about the Iran war, Russia’s war in Ukraine and other matters.
The official said Sylvia failed three polygraph examinations related to the alleged disclosures and that the case has been referred to the Justice Department. The official also said he is accused of meeting journalists outside the Pentagon with the intent to leak classified material after Hegseth required reporters to be escorted inside the building.
These are allegations from an unnamed official, and I found no other outlet reporting them. No charges have been reported, and Fox said neither Sylvia nor the Justice Department responded to requests for comment. The report is based on sourcing from a single, unnamed U.S. official.
This contrasts with the Atlantic reporting yesterday that Sylvia was ousted because Secretary Hegseth lost confidence in him and that he did not get along with policy chief Elbridge Colby. That report did not mention leaks.
The official told Fox that Sylvia was not a central planner of the Iran war, which falls under U.S. Central Command and Adm. Brad Cooper. Fox’s sources said the J5 has been sidelined from its strategy role since the spring.
