A security officer at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa fired on a civilian who breached the base's perimeter Saturday, according to a statement released Monday by the 6th Air Refueling Wing. The intruder was reportedly armed with a wrench and the officer fired "following escalation of force procedures," according to the statement.

The shooting detail is new. Initial reporting from Fox 13 on Saturday described a "violent" physical struggle between the assailant and responding officers, with no mention of a firearm being discharged. It's still unclear whether the assailant was actually struck by gunfire, the base's statement didn't specify, and officials hadn't responded to a follow up request for that detail as of Monday.

Both the assailant and at least one officer were taken to the hospital with injuries described as not life threatening. Officials haven't released the assailant's identity, a motive, how the perimeter was breached, or any charges. The incident remains under investigation.
