A senior Syrian government official, briefing state news agency SANA, accused Israel of arming an illegal militia in Sweida in July of last year to spark chaos and create a pretext for a wider war. The official said Damascus thwarted the plan but continues to see Israeli efforts to undermine stability in the district. The remarks follow Prime Minister Netanyahu's disclosure of a tense call with Syrian President al-Sharaa during the violence.
