About four dozen Marines from 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, are being redirected within Europe to the Baltic Sea to support Baltic Sentry, a NATO-led maritime security effort. The Marines will operate alongside Finland's Coastal Brigade, providing expeditionary surveillance and reconnaissance to help protect undersea infrastructure and support regional maritime security.
Baltic Sentry is led by European allies under Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum and Allied Maritime Command, with the Marine Corps in a supporting role. The Marines will use small unmanned aerial systems and littoral sensors, feeding data into NATO's shared operational picture.
"Working side by side with our Finnish allies strengthens our collective readiness, ensuring we can operate seamlessly as a cohesive, lethal team to deter hybrid threats in the Baltic littoral," said Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Daniel Shipley, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa.
