BREAKING: 🇩🇰 A cyber incident has disrupted construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, the multibillion-euro infrastructure project that will connect Denmark and Germany through an underwater road and rail link.
The incident has hit Femern Link Contractors (FLC), the consortium responsible for construction work at Rødbyhavn, Denmark. Project owner Sund & Bælt confirmed that FLC had reported a cybersecurity incident and said it was in contact with the contractor to assess the situation.
According to Danish media, the incident has knocked out central IT systems, preventing employees from accessing computers, Wi-Fi and company emails. The site's access-card system has also been affected, forcing security guards to register workers manually at several entrances.
Several vessels involved in construction are reportedly standing idle because their operations depend on digital systems and data affected by the disruption. The incident is therefore having consequences beyond office IT, directly affecting work on the construction site.
The problems are believed to have started on Monday night.
The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is one of Europe's major infrastructure projects. Once completed, it will connect Rødbyhavn in Denmark with Puttgarden in Germany, reducing the crossing to around seven minutes by train or ten minutes by car.
The project was originally expected to be completed in 2029, but delays have affected the schedule, particularly on the German side.
