BREAKING | 🇪🇹 🇪🇷 Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict is moving toward a potentially much wider regional crisis.
Pro-government forces say they have captured Milazat, around 20 km southeast of Mekelle, after rapid advances through southern Tigray. Shops and banks in Mekelle have closed as residents prepare for possible fighting.
At the same time, Ethiopia and Eritrea have severed diplomatic relations. Addis Ababa closed its embassy in Asmara and ordered 10 Eritrean diplomats out within 48 hours; Eritrea responded by cutting all diplomatic ties. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting the TPLF-led rebel alliance, which Asmara denies.
This is no longer simply a replay of the 2020–22 Tigray war.
The TPLF is now fighting alongside six other Ethiopian armed groups, while former battlefield ally Eritrea is on the opposite side of an increasingly hostile interstate relationship. The African Union has urged Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to exercise maximum restraint.
