BREAKING | Saudi Arabia has asked Syria to consider military support against the Houthis, according to a U.S. official and a Syrian military source briefed on the talks.

The request was discussed during President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s visit to Riyadh on October 6.

What Damascus could actually provide is still open. One option is fairly limited: personnel and defensive capabilities to help Saudi Arabia intercept Houthi missiles and drones.

The much bigger step would be sending Syrian forces to support Saudi-backed Yemeni troops inside Yemen. That option has also been discussed, but there is no deployment order and no sign yet that Syrian troops are moving.

A Syrian diplomat confirmed Damascus is open to military cooperation through official bilateral channels, while stressing that Syria’s priority remains its own post-war recovery. Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government did not comment.

A small Syrian role in air defence or technical support would be politically useful to Riyadh without dragging Damascus straight into another war.

Syrian troops fighting the Houthis would be a very different story and a much bigger regional escalation.
