CENTCOM needs to understand that the information environment has changed. There may have been a time when people simply accepted official statements without questioning them. Today, that is no longer the case. Yesterday's attacks on two vessels, including one involving mines deployed by a small boat, are exactly the kind of events people can follow, document and analyse from multiple sources. You cannot rely on denial or outdated communication strategies and expect people to accept them. When your statements don't match what people can see for themselves, you risk losing the trust not only of those who already question you, but also of those who genuinely trust your institution. Credibility takes years to build and very little time to lose.
