GEOINSIDER MORNING WATCH

Two things stand out this morning

🇪🇹 Mekelle has fallen.

Ethiopian federal forces and allied militias have taken control of the Tigrayan capital. Crucially, the TPLF has now confirmed that it has “temporarily” withdrawn from Mekelle and relocated the regional administration.

Reuters separately confirmed the government entry through a pro-government fighter, an aid worker and a resident, following yesterday’s capture of Alula Aba Nega airport.

Addis Ababa captured Mekelle once before, only for Tigrayan forces to shift toward guerrilla warfare and eventually retake the city.

If the TPLF preserved the bulk of its forces rather than losing them in an encirclement, the fall of Mekelle could be politically devastating without being militarily decisive.

And the most dangerous variable remains Eritrea.

Ethiopia and Eritrea have now broken diplomatic relations, while Addis Ababa accuses Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting the rebel coalition. All three deny it.

🇮🇷⚓ Iran has now explicitly tied the reopening of Hormuz to its negotiating demands.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf says the Strait will not fully reopen until Washington accepts seven Iranian conditions derived from the earlier Islamabad Memorandum.

The United States has already transmitted a response through Qatari mediators. According to Tehran, the dispute now concerns the sequence of implementation as much as the substance of the framework.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also says Iran wants this stage of negotiations focused primarily on Hormuz, while Washington continues trying to connect it to the nuclear file.

That also helps explain why Tehran has allowed selective traffic while resisting full normalization. A completely sealed Strait risks overwhelming military retaliation and leaves little room for bargaining. Selective, managed access preserves economic pressure while keeping diplomacy alive.

Some traffic continues, including the partial recovery in LNG movements seen in September.

Watch the ships as much as the diplomats. A sustained rise in daily transits before any public agreement could indicate that an informal operational understanding is already being implemented.

🇰🇵 North Korea has provided a clearer identification of yesterday’s missile, describing it as a strategic intermediate-range hypersonic system tested with Kim Jong Un present. That does not necessarily make it a wholly new weapon class: Pyongyang has already tested the solid-fuel Hwasong-16B with a hypersonic glide vehicle.

The claim that the missile completely evaded South Korean and Japanese tracking remains disputed; Seoul says it detected and tracked the launch.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Moscow says it will intensify attacks after Zelensky said Ukraine would increase strikes on Russian refineries. This further formalizes the emerging energy-for-energy escalation cycle, but does not yet constitute a separate operational shift from the campaign already underway.
