Hours after the confrontation at Latvia’s border with Belarus, masked individuals reportedly entered Latvian territory, damaged an electrical switchboard and stole two border surveillance cameras before returning to Belarusian territory.
Latvia’s Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava warned that such incidents could lead to more serious consequences for Belarus.
State Border Guard chief Guntis Pujāts said the necessary steps are already being taken to restore the damaged infrastructure. He also suggested the perpetrators may have been organized criminals rather than Belarusian state officials, potentially operating with the favor of Belarusian services.
Pujāts added that Latvia has seen an increase in sabotage targeting IT and surveillance infrastructure.
