Months ago, I warned about the vulnerability of Romania’s Neptun Deep gas project in the Black Sea and highlighted Romanian Army Chief Gen. Gheorghiță Vlad’s warning that Romania’s Exclusive Economic Zone is not covered by NATO’s Article 5.
Now we are seeing commercial vessels being hit inside Romania’s and Bulgaria’s EEZs. A vessel was struck inside Romania’s EEZ on October 5, while two more were attacked inside Bulgaria’s EEZ today.
This is clearly an escalation from what we have seen before.
This should be a serious wake-up call for NATO. The Alliance needs to be much clearer about how it views attacks and deliberate hostile actions against critical infrastructure and commercial shipping inside the Exclusive Economic Zones of NATO members.
The Black Sea is becoming an increasingly dangerous security environment, and the ambiguity surrounding the protection of these zones needs to be addressed.
