NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) has detected a new thermal anomaly in the Gulf of Oman off Liwa, Oman, first visible at 04:05 UTC this morning. The cause has not been confirmed, however there are unconfirmed reports of a vessel on fire in the region.

United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported an outbound tanker struck on its port side by an unknown projectile off Oman, causing a fire. It is unknown if the NASA FIRMS anomaly is related to the UKMTO notice.

The detection follows a series of incidents in the Gulf of Oman. On Saturday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it disabled the Panama flagged merchant vessel Ocean Molica after it ignored warnings and tried to run the blockade of Iran.
