NEW | πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬ Bulgaria is heading for a presidential runoff on November 1, with incumbent Iliana Yotova holding a much smaller lead over Andrey Gyurov than pre-election polls suggested.

Alpha Research's exit poll put Yotova at 35.3% and Gyurov at 32.4%. Later parallel counts also show both candidates well short of a first-round majority.

Turnout is estimated at just over 22%, an exceptionally low figure.

The two candidates have different positions on Russia and Ukraine. Yotova opposes further military aid to Kyiv and favors renewed dialogue with Moscow, while Gyurov supports closer cooperation with Ukraine and NATO allies.

Bulgaria's presidency has limited executive powers, but the election comes as security concerns in the Black Sea continue to grow.
