🚨NEW: CFB Wainwright's Range Standing Orders flag October fire risks and recommend early-morning live-fire training.
Key findings from the docs we obtained this morning:
• October is designated a high-risk month for grass fires, with early-morning live-fire training recommended -- before 10am. CAF says tragedy unfolded about 4pm.
• The rules restrict certain ammunition during high and extreme fire danger.
• Grass fires must be reported immediately, with updates on their speed, direction and intensity.
• Range Control receives weather forecasts twice daily, and training can be halted when soldiers are endangered.
• Forecasts of adverse weather should be distributed promptly to relevant agencies when the threat becomes known.
• Under “extreme” fire conditions, no pyrotechnics, tracer rounds or white phosphorus are allowed, except where specific site waivers are authorized, the orders state
• Orders also establish detailed procedures for responding to grass fires on the training range.
• The orders are dated 2024, despite a 2025 change of command that should have triggered their reissuance.
