NEW | Germany is doubling down on submarine hunting.

The Bundestag budget committee has approved four more MEKO A-200 DEU frigates, bringing the planned German fleet to eight after Berlin scrapped the troubled F126 program earlier this year. The first ship is expected in 2029.

Germany is building a single class around the waters that now matter most for NATO’s northern maritime picture from the Baltic approaches to the Arctic while also trying to simplify maintenance, training and logistics after the F126 mess.

The second batch is worth roughly €5.3–5.6 billion, depending on what support and reserves are included. Meanwhile Damen, which was supposed to build the cancelled F126s, is reportedly seeking €4.7 billion in damages.

Berlin is closing the door on F126 and settling on what its submarine-hunting fleet will actually look like for the next decade.
