NEW: 🇩🇪 Germany’s BND intelligence chief Martin Jäger warns that Germany is at risk of being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia, saying the confrontation has reached a new, more dangerous quality.
Speaking today at a public hearing of Germany’s parliamentary intelligence oversight committee, Jäger said Russia currently poses the most direct, comprehensive and concrete threat to Germany of any country.
He accused Russian intelligence services of operating increasingly aggressively and professionally and ruthlessly inside and against Germany, warning that the threat of attacks against targets in Germany remains real and present.
Jäger described Russia’s activities as an expanding shadow war that does not fit traditional military or legal categories.
He said Moscow is seeking to weaken Europe’s political support for Ukraine and influence decisions in Berlin and other European capitals so that governments do not take measures against Russia.
According to Jäger, Germany has become a major obstacle to Russia’s ambitions for greater power and influence in Europe and therefore a target of Russian actions.
He warned Germans to expect further intimidation attempts, interference and potentially renewed nuclear threats.
“We must prepare ourselves for attempts at intimidation and further interference,” the BND chief said. Nuclear threats are also possible. However, he currently sees no indications of a large-scale Russian attack on NATO territory.
