NEW | 🇬🇾🇺🇸 Guyana's President Irfaan Ali and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a new defense declaration at the Pentagon on October 21.
The agreement, according to the Guyanese government, provides for expanded military training, joint exercises and improved airspace surveillance.
For Guyana, which is developing major offshore oil resources while facing Venezuela's territorial claim over Essequibo, better monitoring of its airspace and surrounding territory could be particularly important.
Hegseth framed the partnership within Trump's approach to the Monroe Doctrine, emphasizing Washington's intention to counter threats and outside military influence in the Western Hemisphere.
