NEW: 🇷🇺 Russia’s FSB has detained a Japanese journalist in the Sakhalin region on suspicion of espionage, accusing him of collecting information about Russian military capabilities for Japanese intelligence.
The journalist, who works for Japan’s Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, was arrested as he prepared to leave Russia. He faces 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted.
A Moscow court has ordered his pre-trial detention for at least two months. The FSB has released footage showing masked officers storming his hotel room, forcing him to the floor and handcuffing him.
The arrest comes amid strained relations between Moscow and Tokyo and recalls the 2023 detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was released in a major prisoner exchange in 2024.
