NEW: The German armed forces are warning of possible Russian sabotage attacks against their troops in Germany, according to an internal threat assessment obtained by WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ). For the first time, the threat has been classified as significant, the second-highest level on the assessment scale.
The reassessment follows the discovery of a crashed drone carrying highly explosive material near Wunstorf airbase in Lower Saxony in mid-September. The drone was found just metres from an aircraft and may have been lying near the military base for around two years, according to technical analyses by Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
Investigators suspect the drone may have been intended to target Bundeswehr aircraft rather than civilian planes.
The internal assessment states that Russia almost certainly has the capability and very likely an increased intention to target German military facilities, as well as Ukrainian personnel and assets in Germany.
Until now, security concerns had focused mainly on sites where Ukrainian soldiers are trained, naval bases and shipyards. The new assessment warns that the threat can no longer be limited to specific locations and that an escalation could occur in the near future.
The German armed forces say they are strengthening security measures at their bases to protect military facilities and personnel. A spokesperson for the Bundeswehr’s Operational Command told WDR and SZ that, due to the increased threat level, the military currently considers the risk of sabotage to be significant.
