NEW | Trump says the U.S. will not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, saying Washington and Tehran are having productive discussions.

That lowers the immediate risk of another U.S. strike over the next few weeks. But I wouldn’t read it as a military stand-down.

The blockade of Iranian ports remains in place, and just 35 minutes after Trump’s statement Washington announced another sanctions package targeting Iranian oil networks and 17 vessels.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt and its escorts could reach the region by the end of October, while the USS Abraham Lincoln has now returned to San Diego after 265 days at sea.

So for now, Washington seems to be doing three things at once: holding off on new strikes, keeping the military option ready, and tightening the economic pressure.

Iran, meanwhile, says it expects to reply to the latest U.S. proposal within days.
