NEW | US AIR FORCE πΊπΈ | F-22 DIRECTS AUTONOMOUS COMBAT DRONE IN FLIGHT
An F-22 Raptor pilot has successfully directed an Anduril YFQ-44A Fury during an airborne test, marking another step toward integrating autonomous wingmen with manned fighter jets.
The demonstration took place at Edwards Air Force Base in early October and was announced by the US Air Force on October 16.
Rather than manually flying the drone, the F-22 pilot transmitted updated mission instructions through a tactical data link.
The YFQ-44A's onboard autonomy software interpreted those instructions and executed flight maneuvers and simulated combat tasks.
This is the concept behind the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program: a fighter pilot assigns tactical objectives while autonomous aircraft handle much of the execution.
The challenge is turning a successful test into a capability pilots can trust in contested airspace.
