One of five men arrested near RAF Fairford last weekend reportedly called police himself in the early hours of Sunday to tip them off about the alleged plot, fueling speculation he may have gotten cold feet about the operation. All five men in their 20s from London, were later released on bail after police found no explosives in the three vans they were driving, only barrels of fuel.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham now says there are "strong indications" Iran played a part in the plot, which reportedly targeted U.S. Air Force B-1B strategic bomber aircraft and personnel forward deployed to the base, a key staging point for operations against Iran.
An official familiar with the intelligence told The Wall Street Journal that a branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps had recruited UK nationals for the operation, which involved a diversion in the surrounding area. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously said a foreign actor was behind the attempt, and President Trump said the men intended serious damage to a base housing around a dozen heavy U.S. bombers.
Iran's Embassy in the UK has denied any connection, calling the claims "unfounded and malicious speculations."
