President Donald Trump has approved Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's recommendation that former U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hasan be executed by Army firing squad. Hasan was convicted in the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, that killed 13 people and wounded 32. It would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961.
The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place. Army planning under Operation Resolute Justice calls for moving Hasan from the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to the federal execution facility at Federal Correctional Center Terre Haute in Indiana. Army policy requires the execution to occur no sooner than 60 days and no later than 150 days after presidential approval.
