Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has directed Pentagon personnel to use intelligence and cyber capabilities to counter foreign interference in the upcoming U.S. elections, according to a September 22nd memo reported by Axios. It directs U.S. Cyber Command, the Defense Intelligence Enterprise, and joint Cyber Command DHS operations to prioritize the effort, drawing on more advanced AI capabilities than were used in 2024.
The memo does not direct military personnel to polling places or authorize seizing voting machines. Separately, President Donald J. Trump has not ruled out deploying personnel to polls, a position Axios says has drawn concern from Democrats and critics, though that is not part of Hegseth's directive.
A similar effort targeted foreign interference ahead of the 2022 midterms under the Biden administration. President Trump's Cyber Command and NSA nominee, Lt. Gen. Joshua Rudd, called the mission "fundamental" in his confirmation hearing.
