The Department of War has certified that Bath Iron Works in Maine has the capacity to build a second Arleigh Burke class destroyer, if Congress provides the funding.

The Navy’s fiscal year 2027 budget request funded only one Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer, down from two in FY26 and three in FY25, according to Senator Susan Collins. USNI News reported, citing Navy budget documents, that the one requested ship was expected to go to HII’s Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi, so Bath would have received no ship orders in FY27.

Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said the Navy asked for one because of Bath’s backlog: 11 destroyers on contract, seven under construction and four not yet started.

Sen. Collins said she advocated for a second destroyer in this year’s budget. The department says a multi-phase review found improvements in production throughput, schedule adherence and workforce, but released no data. Deputy Secretary Steve Feinberg said the yard “must continue this momentum to fully resolve legacy production challenges.”
