The National Hurricane Center in Miami upgraded Hurricane Isaias to a Category 3 major hurricane a little more than an hour ago, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. The upgrade was based on data from a U.S. Air Force Reserve WC-130 Hurricane Hunter aircraft. Isaias is about 240 miles south of Pensacola, Florida, moving north northeast at 15 mph.
It is the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season and the first major hurricane in the Atlantic since Hurricane Melissa last October. Increasing wind shear is expected to weaken Isaias before landfall late tonight or early Saturday between Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Pensacola, most likely as a Category 2. Hurricane warnings stretch from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay and Gulf County line in Florida, with life threatening storm surge and up to 15 inches of rain possible.
