The U.S. and Coalition partners formally concluded Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq today, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell and U.S. Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper announced. CENTCOM completed the orderly departure of forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base, ending the 12 year mission to defeat ISIS as an organized military threat in Iraq. About 1,500 American and Coalition personnel had been based there, the main hub for the anti-ISIS task force.

The mission now shifts to a bilateral U.S.-Iraq defense relationship, with Iraqi Security Forces, including the Peshmerga, taking full responsibility for remaining ISIS threats. Cooper said Iraqi forces now have the capacity and independence to manage threats to their homeland on their own.

The Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve remains active, relocating its headquarters to Jordan to continue counter-ISIS operations in Syria alongside Coalition partners and the Syrian government.

Adm. Cooper added that U.S. and Coalition forces in the region will stay ready to respond if ISIS threats re-emerge, calling continued vigilance essential to protecting the homeland.
