The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) departed San Diego Sunday for a deployment expected to last more than seven months, as the Navy sustains its carrier presence in the Middle East amid the ongoing war with Iran.
Roosevelt, flagship of Carrier Strike Group 9, is expected to relieve the Japan based USS George Washington (CVN-73), which was sent to the region last month after reports of mental health concerns, including suicide attempts, aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72).
Roosevelt's deployment comes as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says it has redirected more than 100 commercial vessels away from Iranian ports as part of the ongoing naval blockade.
