U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has issued a fact check rejecting recent Iranian claims that commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz have struck sea mines, calling the claims “false.” CENTCOM says all internationally recognized primary transit routes have been cleared of mines by U.S. forces and remain clear, and that thousands of commercial vessels have safely used the lanes.

In recent weeks, Iran’s IRGC has repeatedly attributed attacks to mines, including three vessels it said struck mines west of the strait last week, without providing evidence. The U.S. has said missiles and drones are responsible. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Center has reported at least five attacks on commercial vessels this week and more than two dozen since the start of October. It says the true number is higher because most attacked vessels don’t report to it.
