Ukraine struck Russia’s Novomoskovskiy Azot chemical plant in Tula Oblast overnight, sparking a fire at the facility. The plant was also targeted in a previous Ukrainian strike in May.

The facility, part of the EuroChem group, is one of Russia’s largest nitrogen-fertilizer producers, manufacturing ammonia, ammonium nitrate, urea, methanol and other industrial chemicals.

It also has military-industrial significance. According to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, the plant supplied nitric acid to the Sverdlov explosives factory in Dzerzhinsk, which produces explosives.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have affected an ammonia production unit.
