UPDATE | ETHIOPIA / ERITREA ๐ช๐น๐ช๐ท
Ethiopian federal troops have reached Zalambessa, a town directly on the Eritrean border, as Addis Ababa's counteroffensive continues to push TPLF-led rebel forces north.
Reuters reports the advance, citing six sources. Conflict monitoring also indicates that Ethiopian government forces and allied militias took control of Zalambessa and nearby Fatsi on October 12.
Eritrean troops, previously reported operating alongside the rebels in northern Tigray, are believed to have withdrawn across the border, although their current positions remain uncertain.
Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of invading its territory and supporting rebel forces. Eritrea denies the accusations and has appealed to the UN Security Council, warning that Ethiopia's allegations amount to a declaration of war.
With Ethiopian forces now at the border, the immediate concern is whether the counteroffensive stops there or leads to new clashes involving Eritrean forces.
There is no confirmed Ethiopian incursion into Eritrea. The advance remains on Ethiopian territory, and the precise military situation around Zalambessa is still developing.
