UPDATE | EUROPEAN UNION πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί | UKRAINE / RED SEA

The European Council has formally criticized Washington's decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel, while calling for stronger Ukrainian air defenses and a reinforced EU naval mission in the Red Sea.

In its final October 15–16 summit conclusions, EU leaders explicitly expressed regret over the US decision, while urging further efforts to reduce Russia's energy revenues, close sanctions loopholes and disrupt its shadow fleet..

On Ukraine, European leaders called for urgent improvements to air and missile defenses and greater protection for critical energy infrastructure ahead of winter, following another wave of Russian strikes.

The Council also called for EUNAVFOR ASPIDES to be reinforced within its existing mandate, amid continued Houthi attacks threatening commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.

Europe is making its priorities clear: maintain economic pressure on Moscow, strengthen Ukraine's defenses and improve maritime security.

The next question is whether member states will provide the capabilities needed to turn those commitments into action.
